Baby massage is a wonderful way for you to feel close to your baby and has many proven benefits. It is a way of expressing love, care, and respect through touch and has also been shown to alleviate and soothe many common baby complaints including colic, reflux, teething pains and sleeping difficulties.
There is historical evidence to suggest that forms of infant massage have been practised in parts of the world for thousands of years and it predominantly came into western culture in the 1970s. There have been a number of research studies carried out which indicate that infant massage can have a significant positive impact upon babies in their early days and onwards into childhood and adulthood.
There are countless benefits assoicated with baby massage. Here are my top 5:
Parent and baby bonding - In my own career and experience as a primary school teacher, I have no doubt of the positive and ever-lasting impact that close interaction between parent and child can have from birth.
Really useful practical strategies - Baby massage provides parents with practical strategies which can soothe common baby complaints such as colic, reflux, constipation, teething pains, restless behaviours and sleeping difficulties. These baby ailments can often be very daunting for a new parent, and exploring ways of alleviating these discomforts for your baby is very satisfying.
Relaxation - It is very important for both parents and babies to enjoy quiet time together. Helping a baby to relax and later, self-soothe, can have a long- term positive impact upon their sleeping patterns and restless behaviours.
Brilliant for all babies - especially those born prematurely and those with additional needs! - Baby massage has proven benefits for all babies but it is especially beneficial for babies born prematurely and those born with conditions such as cerebral palsy and down syndrome. Numerous research studies have shown that baby massage has the potential to encourage weight gain, aid motor and cognitive development and increase baby's self/body awareness.
Fun and friendly - My baby massage classes provide a great opportunity to meet other mums and dads with babies of a similiar age. My classes are relaxed and informal and parents often share their thoughts and experiences with the group. We almost always have time for a cuppa and a biscuit at the end of the session!
